On Sunday, Dec. 20, at around 8 p.m., police responded to a report of an assault with a knife in the area of Irving Street in Worcester.

The stranger - who was later identified as Edwin Reyes, 28, of Worcester - allegedly approached the victim on the street and forced the victim into the entryway of a nearby building, threatened him, and pointed a knife at him, Worcester Police said.

Reyes allegedly stopped the victim from leaving the entryway by pushing him back, police said, and attempted to steal the victim’s cell phone.

The victim managed to get away and the assailant ran off on foot.

Soon after, police were informed that a man was running with a hatchet in the area of Elm and West streets. Officers flooded the area and allegedly found Reyes hiding in a driveway near the intersection of Pleasant and Fruit streets, police said.

Reyes, of Cutler Street, allegedly had a hatchet in his possession.

Reyes has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (hatchet), kidnapping, intimidation of a witness, assault to rob, and trespassing, police said.
